For Parents
- Reading is typically difficult and boring for my students. They need confidence-boosting! That’s my job every day. They should be reading material that they are interested in. It must also be at an easy or just-right reading level in order for them to get better at it. If it’s too hard, it is EXTREMELY FRUSTRATING for them. Praise them when they read. Create reading incentives to get them going!
- They can read Sports Illustrated, Time for Kids, Highlights, the comics! Anything is better than nothing!
- They can read to their younger siblings for fluency practice. Picture books are WONDERFUL!
- They should use stickie notes to write down important events, characters, questions, etc. while they read. Their reading books for English class should be full of stickies!
- We have books on tape at school that can be borrowed!
- They should be reading for me for 20 minutes per night, 4 times per week.
- Read to them! Take turns, talk and share your thoughts.
